Rebecca, I would have agreed with you, say 5 years ago. However, the state of the Internet now is one of mobile, shared / recommended content. Brands have a home (website), Embassies (FB, Flickr, YouTube etc), and Outposts (Blogs, Forums etc) - so sending people directly to the website may not be the best next step unless you are asking people to 'buy now' - otherwise, you may consider asking people to interact with your content & your brand in ways that help spread your message to their interest groups and even their circle of influencers. Only after you build trust and relevance can you then ask for people to come 'home' and get to know you better. It's a softer touch now than in 2001 when you could just direct people to your site and the 'buy now' button. If you are Amazon, that may be the best step, but if you are General Mills and you want people to understand your efforts in sustainability, the next step isn't .com but perhaps to a blog, a video, or some other interactive experience that will educate, entertain and inform. They may never go to your website, but you have still conveyed the right message to the right audience and built relationship.

Pinterest is a great way to spread your visual content, but you need to send people to your website. Sending them from Pinterest to FlickR first seems to make it less likely that they'll go on to your site.

Well said Judy! If someone stays idle without taking any initiative, he or she will never accomplish their goal. Each step someone takes is a step towards progress. Thanks for your input.

Hi Brad,

I believe the advantages of using social media outweigh the disadvantages. And there are many considerations and reasons why we need to stick with it. One, we need people no matter what we do in our business. Those who build the largest networks of people-win. Two, things change rapidly. Social media helps us to make the essential changes in light speed.

Thanks for sharing,

Hi Kaleef,

Thanks for all the value. I believe by being initiative, we will also be able to reach our goals more easily. Why? For in every small step we are taking (an inch or a mile), we are still moving towards our goals and if we don't give up, we'll eventually accomplish our goals.

Best,
